Are you ready for the news change to the Alpha Sigma Alpha house!? NEW BATHROOMS. Both the bathroom between 1 &2 (aqua) and the bathroom off bedroom 6 (purple) are getting a complete overhaul. New plumbing, new bathtubs, new tile, new vanities, new everything. Follow this post to see updates of the day to day changes of the bathrooms! Follow along and see the transformation that is going to happen over the next two weeks. Before (Day 0)Day 1Demo begins! This is when things get interesting, and access panel only shows you so much so as the floors come up and tubs come out it will give the contractors a better idea of the project really entails. Day 2It might not look like such has changed but there is new some of the new plumbing installed, the old hardwood floor that was under the linoleum in the bathroom off bedroom 6 has been ripped out along with he sink and the toilet, and the window casings have been removed. They also purchased most of the materials and finishings for the project! Day 3-4Only plumbing was done but we received some in the process demolition pictures from the days before! Little did anyone know behind the shower surround was all the original backlit, which made for more work than they expected, they had to rip out the tile, thick wall of cement and the original metal mesh frame that supported everything. This also resulted in them needing to create a new frame for the shower itself. Day 5Some of the new cement board was put up in the bathrooms, and both tubs are in, which required rebuilding the floors beneath both to level the tubs. In the bathroom off 6 the off triangular portion of the ceiling of the shower was closed off to create a more uniform look to the shower. In the bathroom between 1 and 2 a built in shelf was created on the back wall of the shower to hold shower supplies, but it also a feature in many high end bathrooms. Day 6Floors were leveled and the rest of the cement board was installed! The pressure tests on the new plumbing were also completed! In the bathroom off bedroom 6 a new box to house the plumbing was framed in. You might notice its taller than before, thats to allow for the water control to be higher on the wall, which is a more natural location, the top of this box also will provide the shelf for this shower. In th bathroom between 1 and 2 the vent that didn't open was closed off and the old medicine cabinet was covered up. Day 7Tile work has begun! The floor has been put in in the bathroom between bedroom 1 and 2, and they finished the cement board in the bathroom off bedroom 6. Day 8Tons of tile work done today! The shelf in the bathroom between 1 and 2 looks AMAZING. It has the accent tile from the ceiling on the back wall, and is framed in tile. Really high end bathroom look and we LOVE it. Best part, the contractor did it because he knew it would look nice, we didn't even ask for something that fancy. The ceiling of the shower in the bathroom off 6 is also tiled! Day 9Oh my gosh. This ceiling. It is beyond perfect. To work with the arch that was already present in the bathroom between 1&2 hexagon tiles were used, they come on a mesh sheet and so they could easily form to the shape of the arch, and WOAH does it look incredible. Talk about making a statement. I think you really have to see it in person to appreciate how cool it looks though. More tile in the bathroom off 6 as well! There really is some attention to detail, the large tiles like on the floor were used to create an edge, this is seriously next level stuff, definitely exceeding our expectations. These bathrooms used to be named by colors they were painted, but that isn't going to work anymore! Anyone have name suggestions? Day 10The tile is almost done!!! The last wall of the shower in the bathroom between 1&2 is done, and the tricky tile on the sidewalls outside of the shower is also complete. Seriously look at this attention to detail. That bathroom is really for the walls to be fixed up and molding to go in around the doors in the next few days!
Bathroom off 6 is nearing tile completion too! Only the floor left to finish tomorrow. B Section had a very successful work day completing many projects such as cleaning up the outside of the house, painting the dining room, cleaning and organizing the attic, cleaning the basement, and getting new bunks in bedroom 1!
Enjoy the pictures of sisters, friends and loved ones hard at work maintaining out beautiful home. Take a closer look at the new paint on the walls and ceiling of the dining room, new curtain rods, and new draperies! Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference. After a power struggle with the plaster walls our very own HC President, Tracy Schmitz, pulled off a curtain rod swap for the record books. I wish we had a before picture because the after effects of this update are astounding. Check it out, and come to the 40th for the full effect of the living room remodel!
Lots of excitement at the ASA house this weekend as the IKEA truck arrived to deliver some awesome new furniture courtesy of some of the 2009 pearl class/ 2012 graduating class!
Angela Gaabo Alexandria Holzworth Amanda Geiger Elizabeth McNamara Stacy Binelli Nicole Ellison Jasmine Pizana Emily Scothorn Emily McElroy Heather Woycik They donated 8 pieces of furniture! Two desks, and six dressers. This group worked with HC to pick out the best pieces for the house, based on what they needed most, and the sizes of the spaces for the dressers. This is all part of a master plan to refurnish the most worn out, and non- ideal furniture in the bedrooms. Look for floor plans at the 40th too see the complete plan! After the recent refrigerator upgrade there was some indecisiveness about where the best location for the other fridges to be. Stewards are using one of the fridges for extra food, and food for the weekly dinners, while the other one is being used for personal food. Check out the pictures of the new "personal food" basement set up, and the ultra organized garage area that is now the stewards domain! Special thanks to the Sigma Chi members, Maxwell Petit, Jack Sablehaus, Jake Ebert, and Aaron Villano who did all the heavy lifting!
Just a quick update regarding the foundation problems some of you may have heard about. The attached garage is definitely sinking and pulling away from the house and we have hired Foundation Systems of Michigan (FSM) to install a helical pier system under the garage. This work will cost approximately $18,000 after my new buddy Dave at FSM pulled us a bit of a discount. This work will take place at the end of April.
With this foundation repair comes additional work that will need to be done in the future and these other repairs are where Housing Corp will need significant donations. With the foundation strengthened, the next step will be to divert all the water away from the house. The gutters will need to be repaired or replaced, a french drain system will need to be installed, and the yard will need to be backfilled. Once all that's done, we'll need new landscaping as this work will destroy most of the landscaping we currently have. Housing Corp is currently working to get all the quotes needed for these different jobs to understand how much this project will cost and how much HC will need to raise to complete them. The website will be updated with this figures as soon as they are available. And we finally say goodbye to the dishwasher! The dishwasher has lasted us 12 years, since it was donated in 2003. A-Section donated the new Whirlpool dishwasher using funds from their National House Savings. Mary's father installed it over the weekend, thanks Dad for helping us out!
The kitchen faucet was leaking and the sink in general was looking a bit beat-up. Our handyman Tom installed a shiny new sink and faucet in the kitchen! He also replaced the faucet in the bathroom in Bedroom 6 as it was constantly dripping. He helped us with a temporary solution of patching the shower liner in the bathroom between Bedrooms 1 & 2. The shower is in great need of a complete remodel but is not the highest priority on the project list currently. Here's to hoping the fiberglass patches hold up until we can save up enough money to do the bathroom the right way.
Though the black refrigerator didn't make it far, there is something shiny and new in it's place! The black fridge as a side-by-side wasn't the most sorority house friendly and had some issues and has been moved to the bench as the backup fridge. Thanks B-Section for using your National House Savings money to donate the fridge.
Main Bathroom UpdateLong are the bright pink bathroom with continuous clogging and leaking issues. Members today know this as their main bathroom where only a shower is now found.
